NAJA BOARD MEMBER ANDY HARVEY DIES
Andy Harvey, a current member of the Board of Directors of the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) passed away on May 23rd. Andy was ending his first three-year term on the NAJA Board. Andy was a member of NAJA student projects in Buffalo New York in 2001 and was recently a mentor for NAJA student projects in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2010. Andy Harvey was elected to the NAJA Board during the 25th annual conference in Albuquerque, NM in 2009. Andy was a former reporter for Channel 12 in Phoenix and most recently was the Public Information Specialist for the Navajo Nation Education Department.
The NAJA Board of Directors and staff wishes to extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. Andy was a great friend to all and will be missed by his NAJA Family.
Oklahoma SPJ’s “Building a Better Journalist” Tribal Workshops
Hi NAJA folks … you’re invited to Oklahoma SPJ’s “Building a Better Journalist” Tribal Workshops from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City. Go in the Britton Road entrance, park in front and enter through the front door (on the Broadway Extension side.)
Here’s the lineup:
1 to 1:50 p.m. - Tribal Business. More than gambling and casinos, tribes are diversifying their businesses into chocolate factories, hotels and cultural centers. Speaker: Norman, Okla., tribal attorney Gary Pitchlynn, who has represented dozens of tribes on everything from contracts to gaming.
2 to 2:50 p.m. - Tribal Open Meetings and Open Records. Several tribes have passed Tribal FOI laws, including the Cherokee, Osage and Creek, although for some it only applies to tribal members. The Cherokee Nation also passed a Shield Law for reporters this week. Speakers: Clifton Adcock, Oklahoma Gazette and formerly of the Tulsa World; Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton, deputy executive director of communications for the Cherokee Nation and formerly of the Tulsa World. Lenzy will be providing copies of the Cherokee law for handouts.
3-4 p.m. - Tribal Water Rights and Law. We’ll talk about treaties and case precedents and have some great handouts. Speakers: University of Oklahoma Indian Law professor Dr. Taiawaga “Tai” Helton; and Stephen Greetham, General Counsel for the Chickasaw Nation. Moderator: M. Scott Carter, Journal Record.
It’s free for SPJ professional and student members. For non-SPJ members, it’s $25 for the three sessions for professionals, $10 for students with ID. Oklahoman employees admitted free for graciously letting us use their beautiful auditorium.
